What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a healing modality that has been used for thousands of years throughout Asia. Needles are used to stimulate the qi along the channels, which are a network of invisible pathways throughout the body. "Qi? is often translated as "energy" or "life force." Its smooth flow is interrupted when there is either a build up of qi or a lack of it. This disturbance can be caused by a number of factor which may include stress, overwork, injury, improper diet, of constitutional reasons.

What does it feel like?

Most people find it very comfortable and relaxing. There is sometimes a little pinch when the needle is inserted. There should never be intense pain. A good “qi” response is felt when there is a heavy, tingling, or traveling sensation from the inserted needle. How deep they go depends upon which part of the body is used. The needles are hair thin filiform needles; not hollow like those used for drawing blood. THEY ARE ALWAYS DISPOSABLE / ONE TIME USE!

How many treatments will I need?

Acupuncture is a process. More than one treatment is needed to resolve most problems. The number needed will vary from person to person. Typical protocols can be, for example, 3 times a week for several weeks, or once a week for many months. On your first visit, your acupuncturist will suggest a course of treatment appropriate for you. The purpose of our sliding scale is to help you make that commitment.

How should I prepare for my treatment?

Wear loose comfortable clothes, have a small meal beforehand (don’t have a full or empty stomach), and try to avoid stressful situations before and after treatment, including alcohol or physical exertion. Take note and inform the acupuncturist of any changes that have occurred with your condition between treatments.

How does acupuncture work?
Acupuncture encourages the body to heal itself. While the scientific reasoning as to why it works is still a bit of a mystery, it does not refute that it does work! The physiological effects can include endorphin release for pain relief, reduction of inflammation, increase blood circulation, analgesia through interruption of pain stimulus, and muscle relaxation. Acupuncture is recognized by the National Institute of Health and the World Health Organization to be effective in the treatment of a wide variety of medical problems including, but not limited to :

  • Arthritis
  • Asthma
  • Colds & Flu
  • Diabetes
